Chapter 1

Hey guys!

So like I promised last week here is the first chapter of the story!!

**********

Six years ago , she fell in love ! He was five years older, six feet tall, and quickly moving up the ladder of success which in her eyes made him ten times better than the other ‘men’ she had been with in the past. For this reason she was ready to give him her all and she meant all !

Two weeks after her seventeenth birthday she found out she was pregnant! Her parents, both religious, were disappointed in her ! ‘ We must send her back to Nigeria, she’ll give birth and come back ‘ her father suggested as he frantically paced the living room thinking of a solution to ‘the problem’ while her mother sat gazing into space.

Three months later and her father’s plans were but words. There she was four months pregnant and still in school as per her mother’s request. The father of her unborn child , Bayo had promised to marry her once she turned eighteen which was 6 months 5 weeks and 2 days away, 2 months before she was set to finish her Alevels.

She was intelligent, an A student, even without trying , so it was no surprise that she got into her first choice of university for law. She planned on putting the child up for adoption so she could focus on her career but Bayo begged her not to, promising to take care of her and the baby. With his word, she deferred her law degree for another year defying her parents.

********
A year turned to 3 years. She had moved out of her parents home and in with Bayo, still unmarried but now eight months pregnant for her second child. His attitude towards herhad changed. He no longer bought her gifts or called to check up on her or their son ,Chimdi. He would travel for days without leaving word on when he would return, he was distant, which got worse after he lost his job and with his right to remain in the country at risk he finally decided to marry her. She knew that was his only reason but as sad as it sounds it made her happy knowing he was dependent on her for something.

************

For Bayo , Martha was no longer the vivacious girl he fell in love with. He met Martha at a careers fair which his company had hosted . She looked older than she actually was , with her perfectly sculpted figure, brown eyes and flawless skin . When they spoke he couldn’t help but stare. She was vibrant, driven and outspoken, she knew where she wanted to be and he wanted to help her get there. He was hooked, like a fish on a pole. They would have conversations unending never running out of things to say. He would take her out for business dinners and his colleagues were impressed, some even envious. Fast forward three years, and they could go days without talking. As he stared at his pregnant ‘partner’ feeding their two and a half year old son he realised one thing, she had changed but so had he.

‘What are we going to do?’ she asked him. Three months had passed since Bayo lost his job and with a new baby and an unwanted relative, money was becoming tight. ‘You can get a job’ he barked at her. ‘ Will you take care of Chimdi and Chichi ? She shouted back in reply. ‘Woman stop nagging me’ he said angrily after hitting her.

*******
She fell to the floor, tearful and hurt. This wasn’t his first time hitting her she had actually become quite familiar with his raging anger which got worse after his brother Bolu, aka the unwanted relative moved in after the birth of her daughter Chichi. She was fed up and as she looked at her reflection she could no longer recognise who she was.

She had a plan, at twenty one she was meant to have her law degree and begin her application for law school not be a mother of two with an abusive husband . She was determined to leave him to start afresh. However this ‘ginger’ for change always came right  after they fought and always resulted in nothing . For one reason she had no penny to her name and no one to run to . Her parents had moved back to Nigeria to retire and she hardly spoke to them and when she did she would make it seem like all was well.

Her sister and only sibling was married and living the good life. She had reached out a couple of times but Martha’s pride prevented her from accepting help.

Until next week

Introduction

Hello Everyone,

I have been away for too long, and I can make excuses but I have only myself to blame. I haven’t stopped writing, I just haven’t had time to upload my posts. At the start of the year I came up with an idea to write a short a story and upload a chapter a week, so when inspiration struck in February after speaking to a friend who happens to be a mother of three ,’A Mother’s love’ was birthed.

I am still in the process of finishing her story but I will be uploading a chapter a week by God’s grace starting with this week when I’ll be uploading the introductory chapter. And I hope this little teaser piques your interest and gets you coming back each week to find out how the story evolves!!!

*******************

I could still hear the echoes of Martha’s scream days after the news broke. For eight days she sat facing the wall, knees tucked into her chest. She remained still, although everything around her was moving so quickly, as we all shuffled around preparing for the funeral. We were all scared to mover her , the brave among us tried but then the screams started again so we let her be.

”Get a doctor'”,get some relaxants or sleeping tablets” ,”she needs food” ,”she needs a shower, she’s drenched in her own pee’ ”she needs to snap out of it they need her ”. She heard it all, but she couldn’t find it in her to move , whatever ‘it ‘ was.

On the eighth day, Chichi ran up to her ”do you like my dress mummy?” She asked, ”we tried to keep them away” her sister, Amara said carrying a tearful Chichi away. It must have been the sound of Chichi’s cry that got Martha to her feet . “Mum you smelly” chichi said innocently as Martha held her daughter in her hands “you need to change so we can go say bye bye to Jay jay” Chi chi added. “The funeral is today” her sister explained “it’s not for another 2 hours if .. “. “I’ll get changed” she replied cutting her sister short . As she made her way to the bathroom she could not help but remember how it all began …
